A few of my blog readers know that I’ve been using pictures that I’ve taken to create my sketches. I’ve been wanting to share a few garden photos I’ve taken earlier this year…in and around of garden.
Let’s start with this yellow finch taking a break and sitting on top of our Joe Pye weed.
I’m hoping one day soon, I’ll be able to create a few sketches of the many birds we’ve seen flying around our gardens. The only bird-like sketch I’ve created was a whimsical owl. So there is hope for me and this is a start.
This year’s challenge for me was to sketch flowers. So I thought I would start with my favorites.
I’ve always wanted to sketch the Bluebells. This picture was taken early Spring. Love the bright blue and pink colors.
So I attempted a sketch in watercolors.
I don’t force myself to sketch something I’m not interested in. I’ve also learned to take creative licenses while drawing. This helps me avoid stressing over difficult objects that I don’t feel like adding to my drawings.
Once my creativity kicks in, I kind of go with the flow. I will always go through my pictures. Sometimes I want to create something easy. Other times, I feel like challenging myself.
Peonies are one of my favorite flowers.
It felt right to create a sketch. My interpretation of a peony flower.
Once I feel comfortable with the subject, I will more than likely create the subject using a different medium. This gives me lots of practice time as well as building confidence.
I like the Clematis for the curvy and wavy long petals. I always find the center of the flower to be a challenge.
My gut feeling told me to take on the challenge and see what I come up with.
Here’s my watercolor interpretation of a Clematis. I’m still figuring out the center of the flower, but for now I’m okay leaving this painting the way it is.
I’ve been using my DSLR to capture my subject in difficult lighting. I also love capturing the bokeh or soft fuzzy background behind my subject.
I’m collecting lots of bird pictures for my next drawing challenge including the hummingbirds.
The butterflies had been busy in our gardens.
We’ve had a lot of Monarchs flying around our gardens this year. I’ve been chasing them with my camera in hand.
Somehow I’ve missed the transition from Summer into Fall. I also haven’t been able to create any sketches or paintings. My hobbies have been put on hold for a bit. I carry my sketchbook with me in hopes of finding a few minutes to sketch something quickly. It might be something quick and easy. Maybe pumpkins. We’ll see.
