It’s not often that I’m looking for new inky colors. When the mood hits me, I tend to look for at least three (3) inks to add to my collection. It has to do with making it worth my while for free shipping as well as taking the time to swatch them, create writing samples, and capturing photos.
I’ve been looking at this Sidewalk Gum ink color since late last year. It looks like a dusty/muted purple-ish gray ink with lots of purple-pink shimmers. This exclusive ink was created to celebrate Atlas Stationers sidewalk sale and capturing bubblegum stuck on a sidewalk.
I forgot to post a picture of this inky trio I purchased (from Atlas) when I talked about Hollywood’s Mullet. Let me quickly post a picture of what I purchased. Izzy Monster will follow later in a future blog post.

My swatch of Sidewalk Gum shows a purple leaning grey inky color with bits of blue in the underlying colors. Or maybe it’s more like grey leaning purple color.

Here’s what the shimmers look like in my bottle of ink. It looks like pink, but it’s also purple and it’s very pretty.

I use the word “muted” to describe this ink. My writing sample looks more like muted gray than it does purple. I was on the fence about liking this color. After several days of use, this color has grown on me.

I was flipping through my Col-o-ring and pulled out my purple and gray swatches that I thought were similar and a few I wanted to show a bit more contrast/difference.
With my purple swatches, Blushing Mushroom appears to be similar, but leans a bit more towards blue. I placed my Sunset swatch in the mix to show a brighter purple. It shows how much more muted and dull Sidewalk Gum is.

I think the following gray swatches shows a better comparison. Autumn Forest is very similar in color and just a bit darker. They could almost be twins.

The more I look at my swatch comparisons, the more I see gray in Sidewalk Gum.

For fun, I wanted to show this swatch in between Schwarz Rose and Jewel in the Crown.

With all the ink brands and colors available to us, it’s hard to know whether we already have the ink color or have something similar. Also, when swatches are placed next to each other, other colors are more prevalent or become clearer.
Okay I have to confess. I don’t know where to place my Sidewalk Gum swatch in my ring. Do I place it with my purple swatches or with my gray swatches? Maybe I should create another swatch card and then I can have it in two places.

A few of my blog readers know I don’t tolerate light colored inks especially when I can’t see what I have written. I have to mention that Sidewalk Gum is readable. I’ve found a perfect use for this ink and I plan on using it to write in my art journal. It’s a perfect soft, muted, and “not in my face” color that won’t compete with my artwork.
