I was on an adventure to find a decent brown ink to use in my pen & ink wash drawings. The brown shimmering inks I have in my inky stash all tend to lean towards a reddish color with red undertones.
I wanted a brown shimmering ink that was a bit more unique and did not show a lot of red undertones in my artwork. My goal was to add to my rather large and extensive Robert Oster collection of inks. I looked around for exclusive inks and I came across one from Atlas Stationers called Hollywood’s Mullet. This ink was inspired by the legendary locks of Brendan aka “Hollywood” from Atlas.
I looked at a few swatches and could see a bit of pink undertones and something else in the ink. That “something” looked a bit neutral and maybe had a hint of green color. I placed an order for this shimmering brown ink along with two other Robert Oster exclusive shimmering ink colors. The two other colors will be saved for a future blog post.
I could not wait to swatch this ink and had a really good feeling about this brown color. As my swatch was drying, I could see a hint of green in the underlying brown color. I was so happy to see this and I knew this would work well with my favorite shimmering green inks Candied Mint and Brane.

There is also some pinky undertone colors in this brown ink which I don’t mind at all. In some of my artwork the pink doesn’t show up at all.

I’ve added pictures of my other brown inky swatches next to Hollywood’s Mullet and it’s really noticeable how much red is in the other inks when the swatches are lined up together.

Here’s my other brown ink from Robert Oster. This was an exclusive ink with Vanness that I purchased from the pen show a few years ago. There’s a lot of red in Hickory Aflame.

This was my writing sample on Tomoe River paper. There’s some lovely shading from this ink.

I’m glad I trusted my gut instinct and grabbed a bottle of Hollywood’s Mullet. It’s a beautiful brown ink to write with and lovely to work with in my artwork. It’s my happy brown color.
